MANIFOLDS

MALTA

AUGUST 2015

Designed primarily for low-cost semi-temporary housing, Manifolds is a material research project that focuses on producing a modular kit of folded cardboard sheets to create a range of indoor environments. Individual elements of the structure are optimised for easy assembly, structural stability and environmental performance, thereby accommodating different spatial uses and material properties.

The project began as a research thesis (Architectural Association Emerging Technologies studio, 2013) with an aim of developing a low-cost self-organising modular material system for the informal, transient & craft-based community of Dharavi, Mumbai. A full-scale prototype was first realised at the European Architecture Student Assembly workshop (EASA 2015) in Malta.
